Class & Workshop Descriptions

Below is a description of the classes, seminars, workshops, and private tutoring offered.  To register, click on the “Register” button under the description or you can use our “Class Schedule” link above and select desired courses/dates. Check back regularly as we are always adding classes and workshops, especially for end-of-year exams, AP exams and summer offerings.

This ACT Math Intensive class covers the same material as our standard ACT Math class except it is a much smaller class and is designed for students to ask more questions; it will have a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 students. Cost $50 for 1.5 hour class. 

Preparation and practice for the science section of the ACT. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class. 

ACT Prep Tuesdays and Thursdays Workshop: Students will receive four hours of intense prep in each of the four sections of the ACT (English, math, science, reading) for a total of 16 hours of preparation. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8pm. Cost is $295.Prep for the June 13 ACT begins May 12th. Workshop dates are as follows:

May 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28, June 2 and 4. This workshop will be taught in person at the Center.

OPTIONAL: Workshop attendees get a discount on the practice tests offered the following week. Workshop attendees can register (by phone only) for all three practice tests offered the following week for $75 total (a savings of $30).

A specialized math class for students who want to focus on the most difficult problems found on the ACT. This class is for ADVANCED math students who want to move quickly and address the more challenging math concepts found on the ACT. Cost is $35 for 1.5 hour class. 

Preparation and practice for the English section of the ACT. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class.

This class will be a three hour overview of the grammar rules and strategies utilized on the English section of the ACT. Students will also participate in teacher directed practice using actual ACT English sections from the tests. The cost is $65 per workshop.

This class is an opportunity for students to take a complete ACT in a timed, testing environment to determine areas of strength and weakness on the test. The test will be scored and students will receive a report of their results. Taking this test enables students to get a baseline reading on their skills without having to report the scores to colleges. It also provides an opportunity for students to gauge their progress in preparing for the ACT. We must have a minimum of 10 students in order to offer this practice test. This is a 3.5 hour group session. Cost $45.

Preparation and practice for the math section of the ACT. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class. 

This class is designed for students who struggle on the math portion of the ACT, both with concepts and timing. The class will cover the core mathematical concepts students must know to perform well and also will discuss strategies and timing. This is a three-hour workshop taught by Ms. Paedae. Cost is $65 per workshop.

An in-depth review of the math concepts and strategies essential for success on the ACT. Students will work through and score at least one ACT math section. Cost is $65 per workshop.

Students will take a math section test from an actual ACT in a timed test environment. The test will be scored and students will provided their results. Teacher will review the problems and answers. This is a two hour session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class.

This is a three hour ACT Mini Workshop to prepare middle school students applying for Duke TIP with an overview of the ACT test, covering all four sections, strategies and pacing. Students will receive practice materials. The cost is $65 per workshop.

Preparation and practice for the reading section of the ACT. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class. 

This ACT Reading Intensive class covers the same material as our standard ACT Reading class except it is a much smaller class and is designed for students to ask more questions; it will have a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 students. Cost $50 for 1.5 hour class.

This class will focus on improving reading skills in areas covered in the reading portion of the ACT test. Students will learn to identify style, tone, organizational structure, and main purpose of ACT writing passages. Students will also practice pacing while working with actual ACT reading passages. Cost is $65 per workshop.

This is a 90 minute ACT Science prep class that is held at the Center. Cost is $35.

Students will work through and discuss a series of science sections from an actual ACT. They will practice reading charts and graphs, as well as pacing on this section of the test. This class will provide a comprehensive review of the ACT science section. Cost is $65 per workshop.

Students will work through one ACT science section with guided instruction and then will take a timed practice test. The test will be scored and students will be given their results. Teacher will review the problems and answers. This is a 2 hour group session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class.

ACT Prep Workshop 5 day intensive: Students will receive four hours of intense prep in each of the four sections of the ACT (English, math, science, reading) for a total of 16 hours of preparation. Classes are Monday-Friday, July 13-17 from 9am-12pm. This is a great prep for the July ACT. Cost is $295.

Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm-6pm. Cost is $295.Prep for the June 13 ACT begins May 11th. Workshop dates are as follows:

May 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27, June 1 and 3. This workshop will be taught in person at the Center.

Prep for the September ACT has two sessions.

The first session began August 3 and will be held Monday-Thursday from 6-8pm on August 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, and 13.

The second session begins August 31 and will be held Monday-Thursday from 6-8pm on August 31, September 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 and 10. 

Cost is $295. This workshop will be held at the Center.

ACT Prep Two-Week Workshop (online): Students will receive four hours of intense prep in each of the four sections of the ACT (English, math, science, reading) for a total of 16 hours of preparation. Classes are Monday-Thursday from 6pm-8pm. Prep for the September test will be August 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 and 13. This workshop will be online. Cost is $295. This is a three-hour cram session for the AP Human Geography Exam. It will preparation for the FRQs. Class is offered Saturday, May 2nd from 12:30-3:30pm and will be co-taught by Ms. Brown and Mr. Sutton. Cost is $65. The Zoom link will be sent to the email on file; if preferred, the parent can forward link to student.

There will be two AP Literature review sessions offered. Both sessions will focus on how to write an effective AP Literature essay, discussion of models, discussion of prompts, but different models and prompts will be used in each session, and in each session they will write an essay on a different prompt. After they write, the class will read a model on the the prompt they wrote on. Cost is $45 per session for two-hour review.

This is an end of year AP Biology review online three hour course taught by Ms. Stevens. Cost is $65. The Zoom link will be sent to the email on file; if preferred, the parent can forward link to student.

AP Calculus AB/BC Review (online): Saturday, May 2nd from 11am-2pm. Comprehensive test review/Q and A. The Zoom link will be sent to the email on file; if preferred, the parent can forward link to student.

AP Calculus AB/BC Review: Saturday, May 2nd from 3pm-6pm. Comprehensive test review/Q and A. This class will be taught in person at the Center in accordance with then current COVID-19 social-distancing guidelines.

AP Chemistry Review: Classes will cover units 1 – 7 in the AP Chemistry course curriculum. They will focus on the big ideas that students should understand in each unit as well as appropriate free response questions from each unit. Cost is $35 for each 1.5 hour session. Remaining session is Monday, May 4 - 10:00-11:30am 4:00 - 6:00 More Practice Review Problems and Q and A. This class will be taught online. The teacher will reach out to the student at the email on the account. Parents can forward the email to the student if a different email is preferred.

Ms. Edie Bidwell will be teaching a two-hour AP Chemistry review to prepare students for the free response questions. Class is offered on May 9 from 1pm-3pm. Cost is $45. The Zoom link will be sent to the email on file; if preferred, the parent can forward link to student.

Mr. Michael Jones will be teaching three sessions of AP European History. Each session will cover different units. Remaining sessions are April 29 and May 6, from 4-6pm. Cost is $45 per session. This three hour class will be offered Saturday, May 16th from 9am-12pm. Students will review key concepts from the Language & Composition course and receive strategies and tips on how to write the upcoming AP essay. Cost is $65. This class will be offered in person at the Center in accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines in place at the time. 

This three hour AP Literature review class is offered May 7th from 2pm-5pm. Students will annotate and discuss two past AP Prose questions, read and discuss models, and then each student will write a 45 minute timed essay on a past AP question and then discuss strategies and techniques they could have used in approaching this topic. Cost is $65.

This is a review class to prepare students for the AP Macroeconomics exam, which is being held on May 21st. This course will be taught ONLINE by Clint Sutton. Cost is $45 per session. Remaining sessions are: Sunday, May 3, Units 3 and 4, 4pm-6pm; Sunday, May 17, Unit 5 and general overview/questions. You will sign up for each session individually. AP Physics 1 Review: Classes will cover units 1-7 in the AP Physics 1 course curriculum covered by the modified AP exam. Each class will begin with a unit overview, followed by a series of example problems similar to the multiple choice questions seen on the exam. Classes held Friday, May 1-Units 1, 2 and 3; Friday, May 8-Units 4, 5, 6 and 7. Cost is $45 per session. You will sign up for each session individually. This three hour class will be offered Sunday, May 3rd from 3:30pm-6:30pm. Students will review key concepts from the AP Psychology course and receive strategies and tips on how to write the upcoming AP essay. Cost is $65. This is a review class to prepare students for the AP U.S. Government & Politics exam, which is being held on May 11th. This course will be taught ONLINE by Clint Sutton. Cost is $45 per session. Classes will be offered as follows: Saturday, April 25, Units 1 and 2, 3pm-5pm; Saturday, May 2, Unit 3, 3pm-5pm; Saturday, May 9, FRQs and and general overview/questions. These are 3 hour AP US History Reviews taught by Ms. Parker. Students can sign up for any or all. 5/2/20 9am-12pm: Hour 1 Review Periods 5-6;Hour 2 Evidence/Using Doc (5 of 10 rubric points); Hour 3 Write a Period 5-6 DBQ (Ms. Parker will score DBQ and do individual follow up conference with student). 5/9/20 9am-12pm:Hour 1 Review Period 7;Hour 2 Analysis and Reasoning (3 of 10 rubric points);Hour 3 Last minute questions and answer, test strategy, addressing any content holes. This is a three-hour AP World History Cram session that will include preparation for the DBQ. The class is offered on Saturday, May 9, from 9am-12pm. The cost is $60. The Zoom link will be sent to the email on file; if preferred, the parent can forward link to student.

A class for 9th grade students to prepare them for the testing process. Class focuses on vocabulary development and core test-taking skills presented in a creative and affirming environment. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 per class.

Terry Benson and Renee Bookout present this workshop to provide high school students and their parents with information about the college admissions process as well as the application process. Information regarding course selection, ACT/SAT/PSAT scores, the admissions process, applications, high school resume, essays, interviews, scholarships, Bright Futures and financial aid are some of the topics included in this workshop. This is a 3 hour group workshop. Cost $75. This seminar will be held in the Clay Ford Room at the Gulf Breeze Recreation Center.

Terry Benson and Renee Bookout present this workshop to provide 8th grade-12th grade students and their parents with information about how to maximize their potential for the college admissions process. Information regarding high school course selection, ACT/SAT/PSAT/SATII scores, the admissions process, applications, high school resume, essays, interviews, scholarships, Bright Futures and financial aid are some of the topics included in this workshop. This is a 3 hour group workshop. Cost is $100. Private sessions for groups can be scheduled by contacting us at academiccenterfortesting@gmail.com

This workshop is for seniors who are working on their supplemental essays for colleges. This is not a workshop for the main (common application/coalition application) essay. This workshop is only available to students who have completed their main essay with us at the Center as it builds off of that workshop. Students will work with Terry Benson and Renee Bookout. The workshop is three days for 3 hours each day: August 11, 12, 13 from 2-5pm. Cost is $200.

This is a college counseling private session with Renee Bookout. Session will include review of student's high school progress and creation of a plan for school year/summers, discussion as to what student can do to make sure he/she is on the right track to maximize his/her potential, and an overview of college search/application process. Parents are encouraged and welcome to attend with student. Ideal for students in 8th (end of year), 9th, 10th and 11th grade. Resume and College Essay Workshop: A workshop for seniors to prepare one complete edited essay for college applications. Students will also receive an overview on the college application process. This workshop will be taught by several teachers, including Renee Bookout, Terry Benson and Zach Gaidosh; other teachers may be brought in for editing. The teachers will review and edit the student's resume, brainstorm essay prompt, and review and edit student's essay. Students must bring a laptop computer to participate in this class. Enrolled students will be provided a resume template and must submit a draft resume several days prior to first day of workshop. The Workshops 1-7 are FULL. Workshop 8 is scheduled for August 19, 20 and 21 from 12-4pm. Cost is $300.

This online History Class is designed for students in grades 2, 3 & 4 and will be taught through Zoom. These classes are an opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge of history through a particular lens. Each class will consist of a historical overview followed by discussion questions and a group activity. There will be a different topic offered each week. Some the specific classes include:History of Transportation: Students will learn about the evolution of trains, boats, planes and automobiles before testing their very own paper airplanes to understand the principles of aerodynamics. Women's History: Women such as Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart, and Marie Curie will be covered to provide a broader understanding of the role that exceptional women have played throughout history. The History of Borders: This subject will be split into individual classes about the history of countries in different parts of the world. Students will learn how the lines between countries were drawn. Cost is $30 for each one hour class. The instructor will contact the students prior to the start of class at the email on file; parents can forward email to student if a different email is preferred.

This is a three hour introduction to AP US History taught by Ms. Amy Parker. This class will be held online on August 22 from 9am-12pm. The cost is $65. A zoom link will be sent to the email on file.

This is a two-day intro to geometry workshop taught by Ms. Stephanie Duffy. This workshop will be held August 10 and 12 from 3:30-5:30pm. Cost is $75.

Introduction to sorority recruitment is a small group workshop designed for girls who are seniors in high school and are interested in sorority recruitment for the 2020-2021 school year. The workshop will cover topics such as what the sorority recruitment process is like, how to get recommendation letters, how to craft a recruitment resume, social media, and more. This 1.5 hour workshop will be taught by Brook Ostrander, a senior at the University of Alabama, who is graduating in May. Brook was the former recruitment chairman for her Panhellenic sorority and has served as a Panhellenic Delegate assistant. Through working with the National Panhellenic Association, Brook is knowledgeable about sorority recruitment in different chapters at universities across the country. Each session will cover the same material. Sessions are being offered at $30 on the following dates: Sunday, May 3rd, 11:00am-12:30pm; Monday, May 4th, 10:30-12pm. This is a two day introduction to AP Human Geography to introduce the students to the subject matter and the manner in which to approach an AP course. This will be taught online by Clint Sutton. Cost for the two day workshop is $75. This will be held online on August 1 and 2 from 2-4pm.

This Enrichment At-Home Science Experiment Class is designed for grades 2, 3 & 4. This class will be taught online through Zoom. Euxie Laibe, a senior at Vanderbilt majoring in Environmental Sociology and Political Science, will lead at-home science experiments that require little more than common household items, printable worksheets, and a budding scientist. Each activity will begin with an information worksheet, which Euxie will work through with the students, followed by an experiment that employs the concepts presented in the worksheet. From learning the scientific method and life cycles to environmental science experiments about volcanoes and weather patterns, these classes are a fun opportunity for students to gain knowledge about the world around them. Each week will be a different experiment. Cost is $30 for each one hour class.

Students will learn to self-monitor their study habits to discern the most effective strategies for their learning style. This class will be taught by Nikki Myers. Cost is $45.

Students will learn strategies to improve their test-taking skills on the PSAT. Students will receive instruction in math, reading comprehension, and grammar concepts integral to the test. This is an 12 hour group session. This workshop will be held online Sunday-Friday from 6pm-8pm each night. Cost is $250.

Preparation and practice for the math section of the PSAT. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 for each 1.5 hour class.

This class will focus on improving math skills covered in the math portion of the PSAT test. Students will also practice pacing while working with actual PSAT math sets. Cost is $65 per workshop.

This class will focus on improving reading skills in areas covered in the reading portion of the PSAT test. Students will learn to identify style, tone, organizational structure, and main purpose of PSAT writing passages. Students will also practice pacing while working with actual SAT reading passages. Cost is $65/class.

Students will learn strategies to improve their test-taking skills on the PSAT. Students will receive instruction in math, reading comprehension, and grammar concepts integral to the test. This is an 16 hour group session. Cost $275.

The workshop will be held July 27-31.

This is a 1.5 hour class designed to help students who are preparing to take the PSAT or SAT. This class will focus on the reading section. It is limited to 4 students. Cost is $50.

Intro to Advanced Placement course will provide first time AP students with strategies and skills to be successful in AP courses throughout their high school career. Topics such as the importance of AP for college readiness, study skills, note taking, exam preparation, and student responsibility will be covered.

This course is offered August 4th from 2pm-4pm. The cost is $40.

This class is an opportunity for students to take a complete SAT in a timed, testing environment to determine areas of strength and weakness on the test. The test will be scored and students will receive a report of their results. Taking this test enables students to get a baseline reading on their skills without having to report the scores to colleges. It also provides an opportunity for students to gauge their progress in preparing for the SAT. We must have a minimum of 10 students in order to offer this practice test. This is a 3.5 hour group session. Cost $45.

A comprehensive developmental approach to attaining the skills necessary for successful performance on the SAT exams. Students will be taught the writing concepts that compose the tests. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 per class.
