Class & Workshop Descriptions

Below is a description of the classes, seminars, workshops, and private tutoring offered.  To register, click on the “Register” button under the description or you can use our “Class Schedule” link above and select desired courses/dates. Check back regularly as we are always adding classes and workshops, especially for end-of-year exams, AP exams and summer offerings.

This ACT Math Intensive class covers the same material as our standard ACT Math class except it is a much smaller class and is designed for students to ask more questions; it will have a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 students. Cost $50 for 1.5 hour class. 

Preparation and practice for the science section of the ACT. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class. 

A specialized math class for students who want to focus on the most difficult problems found on the ACT. This class is for ADVANCED math students who want to move quickly and address the more challenging math concepts found on the ACT. Cost is $35 for 1.5 hour class.

ACT Prep Four-Week Workshop (at Center): Students will receive four hours of intense prep in each of the four sections of the ACT (English, math, science, reading) for a total of 16 hours of preparation. The next session in preparation for the December 12 ACT begins November 16 and will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8pm on November 16, 18, 23, 25, 30, December 2, 7 and 9. Cost is $295. These workshops will be held at the Center.

This class is an opportunity for students to take a complete ACT in a timed, testing environment to determine areas of strength and weakness on the test. The test will be scored and students will receive a report of their results. Taking this test enables students to get a baseline reading on their skills without having to report the scores to colleges. It also provides an opportunity for students to gauge their progress in preparing for the ACT. We must have a minimum of 10 students in order to offer this practice test. This is a 3.5 hour group session. Cost $45.

This class is designed for students who struggle on the math portion of the ACT, both with concepts and timing. The class will cover the core mathematical concepts students must know to perform well and also will discuss strategies and timing. This is a three-hour workshop taught by Ms. Paedae. Cost is $65 per workshop.

An in-depth review of the math concepts and strategies essential for success on the ACT. Students will work through and score at least one ACT math section. Cost is $65 per workshop.

Students will take a math section test from an actual ACT in a timed test environment. The test will be scored and students will provided their results. Teacher will review the problems and answers. This is a two hour session. Cost $35 for 1.5 hour class.

This is a three hour ACT Mini Workshop to prepare middle school students applying for Duke TIP with an overview of the ACT test, covering all four sections, strategies and pacing. Students will receive practice materials. The cost is $65 per workshop.

Students will learn to identify style, tone, organizational structure, and main purpose of ACT writing passages. Students will also practice pacing while working with actual ACT reading passages. Cost is $65 per workshop.

This is a two-hour AP Human Geography review session (online) that will include preparation for the writing portions as well. The sessions, taught by Mr. Clint Sutton, will progress through the units. Sessions will be held September 13, October 25, December 6, January 17 and February 14 from 12-2pm. The cost is $45. This is a two-hour AP World History review session (online) that will include preparation for the DBQ. The sessions, taught by Ms. Tracy Brown, will progress through the units. A class for 9th grade students to prepare them for the testing process. Class focuses on vocabulary development and core test-taking skills presented in a creative and affirming environment. This is a 1.5 hour group session. Cost $35 per class.

Terry Benson and Renee Bookout present this workshop to provide 8th grade-12th grade students and their parents with information about how to maximize their potential for the college admissions process. Information regarding high school course selection, ACT/SAT/PSAT/SATII scores, the admissions process, applications, high school resume, essays, interviews, scholarships, Bright Futures and financial aid are some of the topics included in this workshop. This is a 3 hour group workshop. Cost is $100. Private sessions for groups can be scheduled by contacting us at academiccenterfortesting@gmail.com

For high school seniors only: private one-hour appointment to work on completing the Common Application. The session will include writing, editing, and inputting the honors and (the difficult but very important) activities sections of the application, as well as a review to ensure the remainder of the application (testing, personal information, etc) is filled out correctly. Must have a completed resume, which the student will bring to the appointment, together with their laptop. cost is $50 per hour.

This session will be with Maddie Bookout, a recent graduate from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and History and a minor in Human and Organizational Development. In December, Maddie will be starting as an Associate Consultant with Bain & Company. Maddie has edited hundreds of resumes through her time with Vanderbilt’s honors business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, and has worked with dozens of students on completing their Common Applications.

For high school seniors only: private one-hour online appointment to work on completing the Common Application (not essay). The session will include writing, editing, and inputting the honors and (the difficult but very important) activities sections of the application, as well as a review to ensure the remainder of the application (testing, personal information, etc) is filled out correctly. This is a three hour introduction to AP US History taught by Ms. Amy Parker. This class will be held online on August 22 from 9am-12pm. The cost is $65. A zoom link will be sent to the email on file.

This is a two day introduction to AP Human Geography to introduce the students to the subject matter and the manner in which to approach an AP course. This will be taught online by Clint Sutton. Cost for the two day workshop is $75. This will be held online on August 1 and 2 from 2-4pm.

Study Skills and Strategies is a class in which students will be taught skills to help them gain and use information effectively. Students will leave the class with data proven strategies to: improve retention and recall of information, maximize study time by practicing improved time management, and streamline resources with improved organizational approaches. Students will learn to self-monitor their study habits to discern the most effective strategies for their learning style. This class will be taught by Nikki Myers. Cost is $45.

This is a one hour session to work on graduate school applications/personal statements/experiences. Renee has worked with students applying to graduate programs in the fields of medicine, dental, law, business, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy and others. Cost is $75 an hour.

This is a class designed for 9th grade students to introduce them to the different standardized tests in their high school career, including PSAT, SAT and ACT. Students will work with work on test taking strategies and problems in math, science, reading and English. In addition to valuable early exposure and experience with the standardized tests, these classes will enhance the students skills in the applied subject areas and offer enrichment to their traditional class schedules. Students are encouraged to attend weekly for consistency, but it is not required. Cost is $35 for 1.5 hours. This class is taught at the Center.

Ms. Mauney was born and raised in Paraguay and moved to the United States in 1998, so English is her second language. Ms. Mauney has a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources and Conservation from the University of Florida and Associate in Arts Business from Pensacola State College. This SAT Math Intensive class covers the same material as our Standard SAT Math class except it is a much smaller class and is designed for students to ask more questions; it will have a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 students. Cost $50 for 1.5 hour class. 

This is a three hour SAT Mini Workshop to prepare middle school students applying for Duke TIP with an overview of the SAT test, covering both sections, strategies and pacing. Students will receive practice materials. The cost is $60.

This class will focus on improving reading skills in areas covered in the reading portion of the SAT test. Students will learn to identify style, tone, organizational structure, and main purpose of SAT writing passages. Students will also practice pacing while working with actual SAT reading passages. Cost is $65/class.

SAT Prep Two-Week Workshop for the next SAT. Students will learn strategies to improve their test-taking skills on the SAT. Students will receive instruction in math, reading comprehension, and grammar concepts common to the test. This is an 16 hour group session. Classes will be held Monday-Thursday from 6pm-8pm. Prep for the November 7 test begins October 26 and will be held October 26, 27, 28, 29, November 2, 3, 4 and 5. Cost $295. This workshop will be held at the Center.
